The Goonies, Grosse Pointe Blank and Superbad!

I've been a busy girl lately with my movie list seeing as I have now moved to a top 500 movie list from 250! Because of this, I have also fallen behind with my movie blogging which is why I decided to write about these three comedies together. I will start by saying that from these three movies, Superbad is by far the best one and I'll tell you why.

I enjoyed Superbad from the very beginning and I never wanted this movie to end. How can anyone dislike a movie with a character called McLovin. That aside, this movie delves into the lives of three geeks who want one last party before they start College. Jonah Hill, Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz-Plasse jelled so well together and seemed like they have know eachother all their lives.

Jonah Hill plays Seth, a guy you would probably avoid in your own school but one you would still know of. You hate the guy from the beginning and secretly find yourself hoping for yet another car to run him over. Michael Cera on the other hand plays the usual role as he has done in all his other movies. I say don't ruin a good thing since this works so well for him in Juno and Nick and Norah's infinite for example. However the award for the man that makes this movie goes to Christopher as McLovin, the dweeb that decides to have just one name on his fake ID. Seth Rogen and Bill Hader take Mclovin out for a night he will never forget, a night where he gets drunk, smokes, gets laid and shoots a gun for the first time. He does all this with that Mclovin charm we all wish we had!

Grosse Point Blank on the other hand wasn't an all time fave for me, I've never been a fan of John Cusack or Minnie Driver and once again the feeling was mutual. Dan Aykroyd on the other hand played the crazy assassin incredibly well whilst Alan Arkin was a great choice as Dr. Oatman. The concept behind this movie was genius, I just wish they had selected other actors to play the other two roles however. Would I recommend this movie to others or see it any time soon? Sadly I would not.

Last but not least.. The Goonies! Seeing this movie I have to agree with my friend Conor. The fact that I waited until now to see this movie ruined it for me to a certain point. Had I seen this movie as a kid it would probably be an all time favorite of mine growing up, seeing this in your twenties however does not. The magic behind this movie was lost on me I am afraid. I recognise that it is a cute movie and is certainly an all time classic, it was worth it just to see a young Josh Brolin star in a child movie! I would recommend any parent to ensure their kids watch this movie as they will remember it for years to come.

There is an unforgettable part in The Goonies that sums up this movies quite well.  Mikey says:

Don't you realize? The next time you see sky, it'll be over another town. The next time you take a test, it'll be in some other school. Our parents, they want the best of stuff for us. But right now, they got to do what's right for them. Because it's their time. Their time! Up there! Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here. That's all over the second we ride up Troy's bucket.

I can understand why all three movies are in the Empire top 500 list and if you only have time for one movie this week make sure you pick Superbad!!
