After spending a good chunk of my life in Malta, leaving there was hard for obvious reasons such as friends and family but what I did not expect to miss terribly when I left was the food. The reason I say this is most countries have their own delicacies that help replace cravings, this specific hankering however cannot be fulfilled. What is this epic food I speak of? Pastizzi of course! Oh, I do miss a good pastizz!

Australia, Canada and now even London are fortunate enough to have Maltese stores that sell pastizzi amongst other tasty snacks such as gbejniet and galletti. Dublin on the other hand is not so lucky. The way I see it I have three choices; move back to Malta, find a good pastizzi recipe and make my own or fly back and purchase a suitcase worth of frozen pastizzi that should keep me going for a few months.

For all those unfortunate souls that have not yet tried these pastizzi, describing one to you will most likely put you off wanting one instead of enticing you. Wherever you are, please make it your mission to try one, you will not be sorry. I shall attempt to explain what these are. Pastizzi are made from layers of pastry and filled with either mushy peas or Ricotta cheese. I personally love the pea ones and avoid the cheese ones but each to their own, before making your mind up you would need to try both!

I feel it is my duty to warn you that once you try pastizzi you will keep wanting more. The only thing that will hate your new found love will be your waistline.

If you are planning a trip to Malta make sure you check out Crystal Palace Tea and Coffee Bar in the outskirts of Rabat, you will not regret this! They have and will always sell the best pastizzi on the island, the great news is that besides having fresh batches made every hour, they also sell frozen ones to take home with you. Here is the man himself and make sure you check this article out about this great hidden spot.

So what are you waiting for? Head to Google now and try an find your closest pastizzi shop. I am just going to go ahead and say this from now .... you're welcome and you make sure you enjoy that savoury goodness!
